The Chilling Effect: How Winter Wreaks Havoc on Your Skin

Skin expert, Yana, shares her secrets to maintaining bright, healthy skin through the colder months.

Here in Melbourne we are well-accustomed to all 4 seasons, but just how much does the cold weather affect our skin? Join our conversation with skin enthusiast and beauty therapist, Yana, as she talks us through the key culprits of winter dryness and how to protect your skin throughout the colder months!

We are well and truly feeling the first effects of winter on our skin, it feels tighter, looks duller and it's likely dehydrated.

Yana’s Top Tip: As tempting as it is, stay away from super hot showers and baths. Instead opt for lukewarm water to maintain your skin’s natural moisture balance!

Yana from our South Yarra salon tells us that hydration is key to help your skin look plump, bright and glowy! Choosing facials and products that get deep into those hard to reach layers of skin is the way to go.

At SOAK, we use Dr. Spiller's oil-based skincare, both professionally and in retail. These oil-rich formulas provide long-lasting hydration, perfect for keeping your skin dewy. Plus, all our facials include a gentle exfoliation to remove dry surface cells, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion!

Dr. Spiller’s Sanvita Cream is Yana’s go-to for a smoothing and plumping effect, made with green tea to soothe and protect the skin!

Staying hydrated is key during cold weather! Yana, who’s experienced frigid climates firsthand when living in Russia and the Czech Republic, recommends doing your homework by drinking at least 2-3 litres of water per day.

Yana also reminds us that you still absolutely need SPF50+ on your skin every day… even when it's cloudy! Did you know that UV rays can penetrate clouds and reach us even on the gloomiest of days? That’s enough reason to keep us slip slop slapping!

As another treat for our SOAK community, Yana has shared her essential winter skincare checklist for keeping dryness and irritation at bay:

  • Drink plenty of water (aim for 2-3 litres daily) to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

  • Switch to a gentle cleanser like Dr Spiller’s Cucumber Milk to avoid stripping away natural oils.

  • Use a richer moisturiser than usual, both morning and night. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, collagen, panthenol, and glycerin.

  • Apply a facial oil on top of your moisturiser to lock in moisture.

  • Avoid hot showers and baths, opt for lukewarm water to preserve natural oils.

  • Exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells, but don't overdo it as it can irritate dry skin.

  • Don't skip sunscreen! UV rays can penetrate clouds, so apply SPF 50+ daily.

  • Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent dry, cracked lips.

Yana’s Bonus Tip: Lock in your best winter skin by booking in a monthly facial at SOAK!
